What is United Way?

United Way is the opportunity for donors to 'unite' under one umbrella to change the community and improve lives. It also brings together volunteers, health and human service agencies, government officials and other leaders in the community to evaluate and respond to the immediate needs in West Tennessee.

Corporations, employees, individuals and foundations pave the way by contributing money to United Way. United Way maximizes individual donations by combining them with thousands of other contributions and investing in programs that will have the greatest impact. Over 85 cents of every dollar given goes directly into community programs.

Your dollars are invested in agencies and programs in your county that offer solutions to your community's most pressing needs. These investments have the greatest impact in the community, and all decisions are made by local volunteers and are approved by the board in your county.

You can have the confidence that the volunteers of United Way are investing your contribution in crucial areas of need.

You will receive updates on how your money has been invested and the difference you are making in the community.

You have a choice to designate to the agencies or counties you would like to support.

The Five Community Impact Areas

• Believing in Youth
  United Way is dedicated to helping children and youth experience the best that childhood has to offer. Because all children deserve to grow up in a nurturung, healthy environment, United Way invests in tutoring, mentoring and leadership programs that guide young people toward possible adult lives
• Caring for Senior Adults
  United Way invests in nutrition, volunteer, home and community-based programs that help older people retain their pride and independence in thier later years
• Meeting Emergency and Basic Needs
  In order for people to succeed, they often need a helping hand in emergengy situations. That's why United Way invests in programs that encourage self-sufficiency and house, rescue, protect and comfort people during personal emergencies
• Strengthening Families
  Strong families are the foundation of strong communities. United Way helps insure programs in place that create safe, secure and healthy home environments through education and counseling
• Empowering People with Disabilities
  Many United Way programs help children and adults overcome physical and mental challenges that hinder their independence. We are hard at work helping these individuals help themselves and have the most rewarding life possible
